We have the hardback so wasn't sure whether the smaller pocket version would be equally attractive. It is and so interesting. Recommended for anyone who loves travelling, or dreaming about travelling, or 'proper' maps.

What a brilliant quirky little book.. recommended by Ben off the podcast "stuff they don't want you to know"... Couldn't put this book down... Beautifully written and presented.. armed with Google maps and Wikipedia I've successfully increased my knowledge of things, people and places I would never have known about... And if that's not what life is about, what is?....

The atlas makes you wanna travel to these remote locations and you will constantly search images on Google Maps to understand if your imagination was right or not enough. Surprise, most of the time your imagination is not enough (when you can find photos at least). The atlas is structured by Ocean and with a short description of the island or a fact happened there. In the end, it results very concise and with few relevant information for each island, even though mostly enough.

exquisite pocket sized version of a remarkable book of nostalgic interest to this former philatelist and a stunning collection of virtuoso pieces to capture even the most jaded imagination! can't be recommended highly enough to lift you out of these apocolyptic times we seem to be living through!

Conceptually this book is a great idea, but it fails in its execution. Maps. Half the pages are maps, which is as it should be. Unfortunately, by using a grey-blue sea colour and by using grey shadow to show features on the islands concerned, the two are not sufficiently well differentiated and the outline of the islands is in distinct. Greyish islands against a grey-blue sea may be aesthetically pleasing to some, but it lacks practicality. The use of shading rather than contours also gives a hazy impression of the topography of the islands where precision could have been achieved, thereby weakening the book's usefulness as a true atlas. A single scale is chosen for all islands. This gives an idea of their relative sizes, but it means that whereas the largest may cover half the page, the smallest may take up well under 1% of the page! Text, The text on the page opposite the maps is always in one block paragraph. This may be pleasing to the designer, but it does nothing to help the reader. Also irritating is the exclusive use of the present tense for matters that are almost all historic. Another triumph of style over practicality. The texts themselves seem to be very hit and miss in their selectivity. Some are informative, many are really not. Their is no consistency in their subject matter. Key. The maps have a potentially useful, two-colour, key on the opposing page. However, the majority of the scales are in a pale yellow that does not stand out sufficiently from the white page, which detracts from their practicality. Conclusion. This book is a really good idea. However, it falls between two stools - geography and graphic design. The latter wins at the expense of the former. That said, I am still glade to have the book. .

I had the larger version of this book already, and was buying the pocket edition for my aunt for Christmas - and it's every bit as beatifully produced as the original. Couldn't recommend it more, but don't want to give anything away by going into any further detail. Buy it. Now.
